My Philosophy and Compass

I believe that each of us has the resources and solutions within us to make aligned, authentic choices.

I believe that each of us radiant in our wild, messy, complex human state. We are perfectly imperfect.

Our humaness, our struggles in finding meaning and making sense of this beautiful human life is to be honoured, even celebrated.

I’m not afraid of shadows or the hard stuff. I can hold space and share with you how to hold the light to the parts of us that we might have difficulty accepting, we might fear or believe cannot be loved or changed.

In our sessions, hard things, wounded things, unspoken things and things that are creating suffering can find a place to be seen, heard, understood and loved.

FAQs

What is a Registered Counsellor?

Being a registered counsellor means you have completed a certain and specific level of training and education and are a member of a professional association with strict codes of conduct, ethics and practice guidelines. In Australia, anyone can call themselves a counsellor without formal or appropriate training. I am registered with the Australian Counselling Association. This membership gives you certain assurances to my qualifications, means I have appropriate insurances to practice and requires me to undertake ongoing professional development and clinical supervision.

Is a session confidential?

All sessions are confidential and private. If you have any concerns or requests regarding this please let me know upfront. There are certain situations where confidentiality has limits and this primarily has to do with the safety of yourself, others in the community and children.

Whats the difference between a Counsellor and a Psychologist?

This is a common and misunderstood area. A psychologist is a professional who has undergone years of training in the science of mental health, neurobiology, medical models of treatment and clinical diagnosis of conditions. A registered counsellor can support, listen, share ideas and skills, provide strategies and treatment options based on evidence based practice and research (similar to what a psychologist will do) but does not and cannot provide a clinical diagnosis, write formal reports or reviews. At the moment, registered counsellors are also not eligible for Medicare rebates. Often, clients may choose to work with one or both depending on their issues, what types of support they need and the severity of their circumstances.

How often should I have a session?

This depends on the individual and available of appointments. Usually, first sessions will be 1-2 weeks apart and then space further out as work progresses. This is however, entirely up to you and what you feel works best. The idea is that you have enough time to process what was discussed and worked on, apply and practice the skills and techniques in your real life and then integrate these before coming back. In acute situations, sessions may be more frequent or slower paced.
